"EHS Planning and Set Standards"
There are several facets to planning:
Planning(a) Setting Objectives
(b) Identifying Hazards
(c) Assessing Risks
(d) Implementing Standards of Performance
(e) Developing a Positive Culture
Specifically, planning should include at least the following:
• Identifying hazards and assessing risks, and deciding how they can be
eliminated or controlled
• Complying with theEHS laws that apply to your business
• Agreeing to EHS targets with managers and supervisors
• Setting a purchasing and supply policy which takes EHS into account
• Designing of tasks, processes, equipment, products and services
• Setting EHS systems of work
• Establishing emergency procedures to deal with serious and imminent danger
• Setting standards against which performance can be measured.
Measure Your Performance
Measure EHS performance to discover if you are being successful. There are two types of monitoring: ACTIVE monitoring (or sometimes referred to as a “proactive”) and REACTIVE monitoring.
Learn from experience. Audits complement monitoring activities by looking to see if the EHS policy, organisation and systems are achieving the right results. While reviewing policies, attention should be given to:
• Compliance with EHS performance standards
• Areas where standards are absent or inadequate
• Achievement of stated objectives
• Injury, illness and incident data.
Together this information will help you identify areas for improvement.
How do successfully implement the changes I wish to make?
By setting your strategy for EHS management, a number of areas for improvement in an EHS management system will be identified. These improvement areas then have to be transformed into a series of options for action. A process has to be developed to assist in the selection of the best
option, and then the option must be implemented.
Process of Change
(a) Identify needs
(b) Develop options what to do
(c) Select the best option
(d) Implement the option
